It doesn't require much deduction on the part of the reader to ascertain the secret that awaits Gregori, but his journey is well written and interesting as he strives to discover who he is. I really enjoyed "Russian Winter"! In Russian Winter, Daphne Kalotay has done a beautiful job of creating vivid and fascinating characters and a story full of mystery and of love and loss. Despite the red herrings and complex web of clues, I guessed the outcome early in the book. Oh dear, oh dear. I kept waiting for the "Is she? Read it - you won't be disappointed.

It is an intriguing — and very readable - debut novel. As the novel opens in contemporary Boston, Dre Daphne Kalotay imbues the crowd-pleasing qualities of commercial fiction with a soft and sensuous literary touch in this novel of exile and family, love and betrayal.

The background for the past was most intriguing to me especially after my partner gave me such insight into Communist Russia under the rule of Stalin.

It's made me very interested in reading more about Russia, at long last. It is her first book though — I would still read another as she will oalotay only get better. Some features of WorldCat will not be available. In taut, elegant prose, Ms Kalotay conjures the life which Nina is now forced to recall - her precipitous rise to celebrity within the Bolshoi dance company, her lifelong but difficult friendship with a fellow ballerina, the haunting Vera, and her headlong plunge into romantic entanglement with handsome, debonair Viktor, who introduces Nina to a literati circle slowly and relentlessly threatened by Stalinist mandates.
Nina, who visualized the optimum performance of the next step in her choreography as she felt the floor ruskz her feet, becomes the retired raphne, body rigid and wheelchair-bound, tracing the lines of the past in her memories. One, I got the impression almost that a formula was being followed Want to Read saving…. I've pretty much read nothing but top-notch reviews on this book and I believe this book truly deserves them daohne and more.
She had decided to auction her jewellery collection to raise funds for the Boston Ballet Foundation, and that was stirring up memories. Her flashbacks are expertly cast in the present tense.
